A Busy Day at Waimea Bay

Much of the world knows that Mavericks ran their contest yesterday thanks to a huge swell in the Pacific. That same swell woke up Waimea Bay and the rest of the North Shore in a big way over the past few days. Friday morning there was a huge crowd challenging the waves at Waimea, and we were there checking out the action at dawn.

The conditions definitely were not massive for Waimea or perfect, but we had a great time watching. A lot of the big name pros opted to surf the outer reefs of the North Shore. I was able to get a small glimpse of some guys surfing Phantoms in the afternoon thanks to my telephoto lens. We were told that Phantoms had 40 foot faces yesterday, but unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to bust out my camera.

The surf looks like it will be fun and have plenty of size all week so stay tuned for a lot of photos. For now, I hope you enjoy these shots from Friday!

There were quite a few guys in the water surfing and taking photos early at Waimea.

This guy caught one and rode it all the way into the shore break. I'm digging the classic big wave stance here.

We watched a lot of the action from a grassy hill that we climbed up to. This is one of my favorite shots of Waimea.
