Much of the world knows that Mavericks ran their contest yesterday thanks to a huge swell in the Pacific. That same swell woke up Waimea Bay and the rest of the North Shore in a big way over the past few days. Friday morning there was a huge crowd challenging the waves at Waimea, and we were there checking out the action at dawn.
The conditions definitely were not massive for Waimea or perfect, but we had a great time watching. A lot of the big name pros opted to surf the outer reefs of the North Shore. I was able to get a small glimpse of some guys surfing Phantoms in the afternoon thanks to my telephoto lens. We were told that Phantoms had 40 foot faces yesterday, but unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to bust out my camera.
The surf looks like it will be fun and have plenty of size all week so stay tuned for a lot of photos. For now, I hope you enjoy these shots from Friday!
There were quite a few guys in the water surfing and taking photos early at Waimea.
The shore break was no joke at Waimea on Friday morning.
This is why the lifeguards tell tourists not to get near the shore break..
Whoever this was with the yellow board, he had some great rides.
This guy caught one and rode it all the way into the shore break. I’m digging the classic big wave stance here.
A pretty, yet smaller wave.
Waimea was more than a little crowded in the morning.
Not many waves at Waimea see just one person taking off on days like this.
Another rider who rode one in all the way to the shore.
A calm moment in the packed lineup at Waimea.
We watched a lot of the action from a grassy hill that we climbed up to. This is one of my favorite shots of Waimea.
Another great drop at Waimea.
Here is Stephen on top of that grassy hill.
The beautiful Rebecca Mctear.
Here is a shot that Rebecca took from the rocks on the famous point at Waimea.
Another shot by Rebecca from the rocks.
The view of the initial takeoff from the rocks.
Guys towing in at Phantoms. This is about a half mile offshore… That takes guts.
Another shot of the same guy at Phantoms. That’s a huge wave!
Exit shot: Trying to escape the whitewater at Phantoms on a jet ski. This was interesting to watch!
